NWNCX and nwncx_connection plugin is HIGHLY recommended - it will allow you to preload module resources, which is necessary to create some characters (unless you log in with another character, log out and then create it) without making them illegal. See the download Vault entry for more info.
If you don't want to download NWNCX or this plugin, you should probably create a simple (all "recommended") fighter character with which you should log in before creating any proper characters.
